Casey's Pond: A Brief History
Located in the heart of the Yampa Valley, Casey’s Pond is a welcoming senior living community surrounded by mountain views and open skies. While it is the only continuing care retirement community in a Colorado mountain resort town, its roots in Steamboat Springs reach back to the early 1900s.
Originally known as Storm Mountain Lake, the pond is believed to be man-made and was once part of land settled by pioneer ranching families such as the Sindens and Selbes. In the late 1950s, the Casey family became owners of the property, lending their name to the pond and contributing to early development in the area. A historic log cabin from Pine Street was later moved to the site and became a familiar landmark and visitor center at Steamboat’s eastern entrance.
Between 2008 and 2009, community healthcare leaders envisioned transforming the land into a full-service senior living community. Supported by the Yampa Valley Medical Center Foundation, Casey’s Pond was designed using the “Green House” model of care, emphasizing a home-like environment and personalized support. Construction began in 2012, and the first residents moved in by October 2013 to their new suites at The Doak Walker House wing. Shortly after, Independent Living and Assisted Living residents moved in, marking a new era for the community.
Today, Casey’s Pond offers independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing, continuing to evolve to meet residents’ needs. In 2024, Northwest Colorado Health became the new owner following a community-led effort to preserve the organization. With renewed leadership and a strong commitment to exceptional care, Casey’s Pond looks ahead to a vibrant future serving seniors in Steamboat Springs.
