Board #4 2

BJ Heuberger
Secretary

I was born in New Jersey in 1947, but was raised in Delaware, graduating from the University of Delaware in 1969 and Masters in 1971. Upon graduation, I taught for 7 years and decided that was not my calling. I changed paths and did architectural drafting and design work for several years before being diagnosed with a rare and sometimes debilitating eye disease. This, along with having children pretty much derailed my work plans. I kept very involved with raising my family, a move to Germany for 3 years, remodeling and design projects for self, friends and family as well as volunteer work in numerous capacities. I always considered myself very fortunate to be in a position where I could choose not to work.

Growing up, I never thought of myself as an athlete. I discovered this great obsession after getting married. My husband and I started skiing together (not an easy feat from Delaware!), running and biking. Our passion for these activities led us to retire in Steamboat in 2002.

Shortly after retiring, my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This put us on a totally different trajectory and I have to say that there is nowhere in the world that I would have rather been than here in Steamboat while dealing with this. This close-knit community, the friends we had made and the existence of Casey’s Pond were instrumental in getting us through this difficult time.

After we moved to Steamboat, my father passed away and I signed my mother up for a unit in Casey’s Pond upon completion. To my surprise, she agreed to come. This 93-year-old woman left her hometown of 60+ years in Delaware to become one of the very first residents of Casey’s Pond in Independent Living. She embraced it, loved everything about Steamboat and called it her “last great adventure”! A couple of years later, my husband also became a Memory Care, then Doak resident. I became very familiar with Casey’s Pond from a “consumer” perspective—with a resident that enjoyed everything that Casey’s had to offer and a resident that was very painful for me to see there. My husband and mom passed away within 6 months of each other, and it was after that that I joined the Casey’s Pond Board.

worked in many fields of practice prior to retirement. First in adult neuro physical rehabilitation at the University of SC Medical Center in Charleston, and in rural schools addressing severely and
profoundly disabled children then eventually hand therapy and Gerontology practice in Colorado.

While raising a family, Karen became a dedicated volunteer and fundraiser for many organizations, beginning with the Air Force Academy Auxiliary, YVMC emergency room "Helping Hands' ' program, all
public schools, Perry Mansfield Performing Arts Camp, SSWSC, and the Steamboat Art Museum. A sense of humor and passion led to her becoming one of the founders of the first SBS Children's Museum(1999-2004) and "Witches Nite Out". She currently serves on the Board of Directors for
Casey's Pond Senior Living Community(2014) and the Yampa River Botanic Park(2012).

their son, Conner’s testimonial to aide in the passage of the Fentanyl Accountability Bill of 2022 (#1326) at the state capitol. In a continuing effort to support people in recovery, the family has created a space, “Conner’s Corner” for NA, AA members to meet and form bonds here in Steamboat
Springs. In the Fall of 2023, the Bomberg family participated in a statewide exhibition, Into Light Project which honors the stories of loved ones in an effort to destigmatize addiction and change the conversation around substance use disorders.

Karen's hobbies and interests include being an annual patron of Strings in the Mountains Music Festival and the Literary Sojourn. She is also a longtime contributor to the Yampa Valley Breast
Cancer Awareness Project as many of her close friends have become "sheros"in their battles with this disease. An avid hiker, Karen hopes to continue exploring more remote destinations like the San Rafael Swell, Gold Butte and Dinosaur National Monument.

This past year, Karen was honored to be a collaborator for the Yampa River Botanic Park's own "Serenity Walk" which embraces the healing power of nature for all those in need. "I often find my voice and heart in: family and friendships, creativity and art, and the beauty of nature that abounds here. I am forever grateful to be a part of this incredible community."
